Thomas Thwaites 'How I built a toaster - from scratch'.
We can buy a toaster for £3.94 and think nothing of it, inside there are 400 components and it uses over 100 different materials. Thomas Thwaites is an innovative design, thinker who wanted to explore what it
means to make such a complex object. So he decided to make a toaster – from scratch!
For this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week Orangebox will continue the theme of looking at design
innovation from a creative and leftfield perspective. Last year Andy Middleton a founder of www.dolecturers.com and a respected commentator on change innovation, presented 'A change with nature, future-proofing business with Biomimicry and Smart Design', which explored what design can learn from Biomimicry.
This year we have Thomas Thwaites presenting a series of talks. Thomas is a designer looking at how technology, science and economics interact and shape both present and future society. Since, ‘How I built a toaster - from scratch' appeared on www.ted.com Thomas’s project has achieved considerable acclaim resulting in an upcoming exhibition at the Science Museum in London, a book published later this year by Princeton Architectural Press and a research project supported by the Wellcome Trust.
Ted reported "It takes an entire civilization to build a toaster. Designer Thomas Thwaites found
out the hard way, by attempting to build one from scratch: mining ore for steel, deriving plastic
from oil ...amazing he got as far as he got".
This intriguing and humorous talk 'How I built a toaster from scratch' will be
presented in the Orangebox showroom on Wednesday 25th May at 4:30pm and Thursday 26th May at 1:30pm.

Orangebox are one of the UK's leading office furniture manufacturers and are concerned to ensure we manufacture responsibly and with intelligence. An agenda which is recognised with the accolade of Orangebox becoming the first office furniture company in Europe to design, develop and manufacture a Cradle to Cradle task chair. Thomas Thwaites ideas explored through his maverick and thought provoking research, help reveal the complexity of contemporary manufacturing and illustrate the sheer scale of the challenge we face in manufacturing products responsibly.
